Danger! Beware of the heat and save your pups feet (we mean paws)!

Did you know that your doggo can burn their paws on their daily walks, especially if they are being walked on asphalt or concrete? It’s a fact!

If you live in South Florida like we do, this should be a concern most of the year, but especially during these hot Florida summer days.

At 85°F air temperature with direct sun asphalt can reach temps up to 110°F
At 90°F air temperature with direct sun asphalt can reach temps up to 150°F
At 100°F+ air temperature with direct sun asphalt can reach temps up to 160°F

With temperatures reaching 140-150°F it can cause severe burns to your pup’s paws in a matter of minutes!

A great rule of thumb is to place the back of your hand on the concrete/asphalt for 5-7 seconds. If it is too hot for you to hold your hand there, it is too hot for your dog’s paws!

So, what can you do? Try to avoid the hottest times of the day to walk your best bud(s), especially if you are in an urban area with limited green space. Adjust your walking times to before 11:00am or after 6:00pm. You can also purchase a pair of slip-on dog shoes or booties to help keep your pup safe. We recommend these slip over/Velcro booties from Amazon (https://amzn.to/3yUjuAk). Now your pup can be safe and fashionable to boot (pun intended)!

As always, if you ever have any concerns that your dog may have suffered burns or injuries to their paws while on their walk we recommend you follow up with your vet immediately.
